Ogród Zoologiczny w Krakowie

Ogród Zoologiczny w Krakowie został założony w 1929 roku na terenie Lasu Wolskiego, który znajduje się na wzgórzu Pustelnik. Jego powstanie było wynikiem inicjatywy Krakowskiego Oddziału Towarzystwa Przyrodniczego im. Mikołaja Kopernika.

Zwierzyniec na terenie Wawelu, gdzie niegdyś trzymano różnorodne gatunki zwierząt, podupadł po przeniesieniu królewskiej siedziby do Warszawy. W XVIII i XIX wieku próbowano tworzyć zwierzyńce w innych miejscach Krakowa, m.in. w Parku Krakowskim.

Otwarcie współczesnego ogrodu miało miejsce 6 lipca 1929 roku w obecności prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej, prof. Ignacego Mościckiego. Zoo w tym czasie posiadało bogatą kolekcję zwierząt, która składała się z ssaków, ptaków i gadów.

Dyrektorem zoo aż do 1966 roku był Antoni Koziarz. Obecnie Ogród Zoologiczny w Krakowie prezentuje około 260 gatunków zwierząt, co stanowi około 1500 osobników. Znajduje się na obszarze prawie 17 hektarów i corocznie przyciąga ponad 500 tysięcy zwiedzających.
