Muzeum Ziemi Międzyrzeckiej

Muzeum Ziemi Międzyrzeckiej im. Alfa Kowalskiego szczyci się największą w Polsce kolekcją portretów trumiennych, a także tablic inskrypcyjnych i herbowych. W skład kompleksu muzealnego wchodzi zamek Kazimierza Wielkiego z XIV wieku, park, dom bramny oraz XVIII-wieczny budynek starostwa, który obecnie pełni funkcję muzeum.

Tradycja tworzenia portretów trumiennych jest ściśle związana z obyczajowością sarmacką, obejmującą polską szlachtę różnych wyznań, najczęściej protestancką, zamieszkującą te tereny. Portrety umieszczano na trumnie na wysokości głowy zmarłego, podczas gdy tablice znajdowały się na wysokości nóg. Przed ceremonią pogrzebową portrety były usuwane z trumny i eksponowane w kościele. Te niezwykłe dzieła sztuki powstawały zarówno przed, jak i po śmierci członków rodów szlacheckich.
